‘time to let things go’ by skylights: striking change of pace

With the release of ‘Time to Let Things Go’ on February 9, Skylights are back with a stunning song that’s bound to add more followers to their ever growing fanbase. The Yorkshire four-piece — Rob Scarisbrick (vocals), Turnbull Smith (guitar), Jonny Scarisbrick (bass), and Myles Soley (drums) — have cultivated a very distinctive sound that’s driven by big guitar sounds and characteristic drum-infused melodies, poignant lyrics and loads of hard work.

Their newest offering is strikingly different to 2023 release ‘Rebellion’. Let me tell you, it took me by surprise a bit, in the best way of course. It’s an acoustic beauty, very reflective in nature, imbued with a nostalgic feeling. (It’s been described as melancholic, but I would disagree on that a bit). Songwriter Turnbull muses that “it reflects on life as if every moment has been written in a book; good and bad experiences, pivotal decisions and hard choices where you have had to let things and people go, no matter how hard it was to do, to ultimately change your path in life for the better.”

Musically it starts with a soft acoustic guitar that’s joined by keyboards as the vocals start, and slowly more layers are added to build up a soft grandeur that compliments the feeling delivered though Rob’s interpretation. The addition of percussion and soaring strings create a lovely and expansive soundscape that envelopes the listener. The melody is brought to life in bright hopeful notes, which helps convey the feeling that even though there’s a sadness to the lyrics there’s always something better ahead, especially with the beautiful upwards progression in the melody at the end of the song that leaves an open space dangling in the air.

In my opinion this is both an excellent song and fabulous choice as a single, showcasing another side of the band’s creativity and range.

Gearing up for an exciting year, Skylights play the Magna Adventure Centre in Rotherham on April 20, alongside The Enemy and The Farm. They’ve also got an exciting hometown headline show lined up for later in the year at York’s largest indoor music venue, details TBA, and they’ve just announced a return to Aberdeen The Tunnels in September.
