There are lots of things in life that make me excited and happy. You might say I’m an avid enthusiast. But there’s one thing in particular that fills my heart with an inordinate amount of joy, and that’s having the privilege of experiencing a band’s growth in real time. And my oh my, how the Denabys have grown!
I’m not going to lie, I’ve loved this Yorkshire four-piece since 2022’s ‘Sunshine’, so I’m partial to everything they release. But they’re definitely stepping up their game with this one. If 2023’s ‘Greenlight’ was the band leaning into a rockier sound, ‘Talk of the Town’ is where they fully step into it.
This tune has great bass work, stomping drums and an in-your-face attitude brought to life with excellent vocals. For me, the most interesting thing about this piece is the musical aspects of how the guys play with the rather classic structure of the rock genre, having almost stripped-back vocals intertwined with heavy, darker guitar sounds in between the verses. It creates a compelling call-and-response effect that plays incredibly well with the lyrics. And to cap it all off, there are catchy riffs and progressions, topped by an incredible guitar solo moment around 1:50 that is worthy of the song’s title.
I daresay this is my favourite song by the Denabys to date, and I can’t wait for them to keep going.
