London four-piece The Great Leslie are getting listeners primed for their third EP, Heavy Unsteady (due out in March), with the release of their latest single ‘I Like It Here’ on January 26. Frontman Ollie Trevers explained that this track “follows the narrative of stumbling across somewhere where everything seems perfect, and at that time and in that place, there is nowhere else you’d rather be.”
Aura’s take
You know that pleasurable feeling you get when you eat a sweet and sour candy? That’s how ‘I Like It Here’ feels.
And oh wow! It’s packed with goodness to feed The Great Leslie’s growing following. The scrumptious bass line paired with what can only be called sexy riffs is bound to catch the ear of many unsuspecting listeners out there. The guys deliver on their characteristic glam-infused rock sound, while playing around with extra juiciness with funky bass layered on jazzy snares. The overall effect elevates their sound to new heights.
Frontman Ollie Trevers delivers what may well be his best vocal work to date, leaving one truly feeling like being on a night out with them.
Believe me when I tell you you’re in for a treat with this nose-scrunching, lip-puckering banger.
Brooke’s take
Listen, I was lucky enough to get to hear the guys working on this one in their London rehearsal space back in November and when I tell you I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since, I mean it. Even incomplete, it had a magnetic and hypnotic quality that has had me humming along by mere memory for months.
At the time, I didn’t glean much from the lyrics because my mind was spinning out, trying to suss out what the funked up bass riff on the chorus reminded me of. (I’m not proud of how long it took for things to ahem… ‘Come Together’). Perhaps not quite the political rallying cry that the Abbey Road track is want to be, I dare say there’s more to ‘I Like It Here’ than first meets the eye (or ear, as it were). But even purely at surface level it’s wildly enjoyable. Electrifying, eminently grooveable. Timeless in quality while still feeling decidedly current.
There’s nothing so appropriate as the tune’s very lyrics for the final word here: I like it, I like it, I like it!
